Must Have Picture Books
I know, I am a little late for this linky party. That seems to be the way everything is for me--LATE!! I guess I will blame it on summer break. No schedule and time limits for anything. What will I do when school starts back up in 2 1/2 weeks?
I have many favorite picture books, so I decided to limit this to a few of my favorite beginning of the year books. Here I go:
1.First Grade Jitters by: Robert Quackenbush-This book is about a little boy about to enter first grade and doesn't know what to expect.
2. The Worst Day of My Life Ever by: Julia Cook- JR is having a very bad day. He learns that his problems happen because he isn't listening or paying attention to his mom, teacher, principal, and friends. This is a great book for social skills

Back To School Freebie!
Happy Saturday everyone!!
Today looks like a good day to sit by the pool and do absolutely nothing! So, I called my sister Mary and she is heading over this afternoon for a day of nothing but relaxation. It won't be long and there won't be to much of that, so we have to get it while we can.
The first couple weeks of school are always so crazy. Why do you think that is? It seems that after Labor Day things calm down, remember we start school August 8th. What are some things that you do to help those first couple of weeks run smoothly?
Mary sent me this yesterday. It's a vowel digraph sort review for second grade. I am going to use it after I teach my firsties this skill as a word work station. Click on the picture to download it. We would love some feedback if you download it.

A Flash Freebie
Happy Wednesday, I think!! :) Since school has been out I am having a hard time keeping up with what day of the week it is. Anyone else have this problem.?
I went to my room yesterday and began organizing all of my literacy games that I have made or purchased from other talented bloggers. I don't even want to know how much money I have spent in colored ink! Anyway, it inspired me to come home and make a game for the beginning of the year. I want to see how many of my students can distinguish between CVC and CVC-e words.
I am giving this game away for FREE until I get home this afternoon. I am going back to school to continue the organizing the mess that is laying all over my tables.
Click on the picture below to go to my TPT store. Hurry it won't be free for long!

Short Vowel Freebie
Happy Tuesday everyone! I started going into work yesterday but forgot my camera to take pictures. Oh well, I will just wait and post pics when my room is completely done.
I am starting to get excited about school now. I haven't been in teacher mode all summer, its been nice but I feel so far behind. I made this short vowel sort as a review for my first graders. I figured it would be a good activity to use while I am teaching routines and procedures during small group reading. You can pick it up at my Teachers Pay Teachers store if you are interested. Just click the picture below.

Happy Fourth of July and MIA With No Excuse!!
Happy 4th everyone!! We are going over to some friends house tonight to celebrate. I am looking forward to some relaxing time with friends.
I owe such a big apology to all of you! I have not been a very good blogger this summer. I just can't seem to get inspired and motivated to post or create. I have all intentions when I get up in the morning and it just slowly goes away as the morning progresses!! After the 4th, I always start going to school and working in my room (we go back to school August 8th). So, I hope this will start motivating me and help inspire me to begin blogging again. I have started projects that I need to finish and post.
Thanks for not giving up on me-- I will be back!! :)

There Are Still Helpful People Out There And A New WInner
What a week it has been! We have been out of school for almost two weeks and I have done nothing. It is time for me to get on the ball and get all those house and school projects started and completed.
Sometime don't you wonder if there are still helpful people that would still assist a stranger in a pickle? Well I experienced not one but two wonderful, helpful people this week. First, I was coming home from a friends house and got a flat tire. I quickly turned into the first gas station I could find and called my husband. He was no where to be found!! Luckily I remembered I have Triple A so I called them,"It will be about an hour." They said. In the mean time this nice man tapped on my window and offered to change my tire for me. All dressed up and everything!! Second, As I was pressure washing our deck I ran out of gas. I loaded up the gas cans and headed to the gas station. Well, let me tell you about gas containers today, they are ADULT and CHILD PROOF!! I was trying my hardest to get the darn things open- thinking I am a teacher I know how to figure things out, surly it can't be this difficult? Another very nice man hollered from a distance, "Looks like you could use some help." I gladly took him up on his offer. He showed me how to open, re-close, and pour from this gas container. So I just want to say a huge Thank-You to all the helpful people out there who are not afraid to help a stranger in need!!!
Now on to the new winner. The original winner never contacted me so I drew again. The new winner is .....
Kelly B AKA Queen Bee!! Please email me with your e-mail address and I will get you your TPT gift certificate to you.

And The Fun Begins!!!
Welcome summer break! Our students last day was Wednesday and teachers last day was yesterday. It has been a very long time since we have been out of school this early. I owe it all to NO SNOW DAYS!! We do not go back for almost 3 weeks, what will I do with all that time?
It was a very trying year and as much as I love my students, I am very glad to see it come to an end. With a few weeks of rejuvenation I will be ready to start thinking about next year. I am hoping to create lots of activities and freebies to share over the summer.
I won a Smart Board on closing day! I never win anything so I was so excited. Where is the best place to find resources?
I hope everyone has a great end to their year and a safe and restful summer break.

A Wonderful Mother's Day And A New Unit
I hope all mothers had a wonderful and relaxing day yesterday, I sure did. It was nice to have the family over for a very low key meal and great conversation.
With 3 days of school left, we have a short amount of time to review our skills learned this year. I put together this pirate unit to end our study of the ocean. I think this has been the unit that we have had the most fun with. Maybe because its the end of the year and I have the beach on my mind. :) If you are interested click the picture below for a look at the preview. I will send the first 2 people that comment on this post the unit for free.
Enjoy your week!

6 More Days and an Ocean Freebie!
It's hard to believe that this school year has come to an end. In 6 days my little darlings will be 2nd graders! It has been a fun and exciting year and as the saying goes, "All good things must come to an end."
To end our year we have been studying the ocean/beach. One of our favorite books has been Big Al and Shrimpy. Here is some activities we did with this story. First we went over some vocabulary words from the story. Next we read the story, and then we played a game called Line Them Up. Here are the directions for the game: Review the vocabulary and read the story so it is stale text. The next day- give each child a copy of the vocabulary cards ( you can pair students to reduce copying). Tell the children that you are going to read the story again, when they hear a vocabulary they will line the words up in the order that they hear them. After you have read the story and the vocabulary cards are lined up, call on a child to read the order of his/her words. Here are some variations: call out the definitions and use in a sentence, but leave the word out. My kids love this game. I have also included a beginning, middle, end, and problem solution graphic organizer. Click on one of the images below to get your copy.

On another note we have been studying the ocean using Common Core Standard 1.RL.6 Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text. One of our activities was riddles- I wrote riddles in first and third person, the students had to identify the ocean creature and tell me what person was telling the riddle. They had a ball with this simple activity. Here are the riddles that I made if you would like to use them. Click the picture below.

Too Early To Be Posting A Derby Unit and Mother's Day Freebie
It is 3:30a.m. and I have been up since 2:00a.m.! Maybe it's the excitement of only having a 4 day week this week, we are off for Oaks Day.I am sure that is not what it is but that is what I am going with :). I used this time to finish up my Derby unit and created a little Mother's Day Card.
Here on the TPT or TN for my Derby Unit-- If you are interested in purchasing this unit -Just know that the place value and consonant digraph activities were previously on my Dr. Seuss unit. Since that had to be taken down because of copyright issues, I added the activities here. The first person to comment on this post will get this unit for free. Remember to leave me you e-mail address.
Now it's time to see if I can get some shut eye before 5:00 roles around and it's time to get up!! Enjoy your week.

Bugs, Bugs, Bugs
Bugs, Bugs, Bugs, Yuck!!! I love doing units on theses little creatures, but as far as having them in my classroom-- NO, NO, NO!!!
The teacher that I collaborate with thinks differently. She talked me into letting her bring in different kinds of bugs for the kids to observe. It's a good thing I love her so much!!! So what did she do? She brought in different bug catcher containers with different bugs in them. Where did she put them? On the kids tables!! Oh my, I am just waiting for a disaster to happen.
We have crickets, centipedes, meal worms (just waiting to come in and find little beetles all over my room :), and a spider( I know it's not an insect- but the kids are loving watching and waiting for her to spin her web. A Walking Stick will be joining us in the morning, as well as a caterpillar.
I just wish I would have taken pictures today, the looks on my kids faces were priceless. Though this has not been the highlight of my bug unit, I will have to say that the sacrifice has been worth the learning that my little ones are getting. They are so into this unit. I have used Deanna Jumps insect unit- it is fantastic!
Here is a graphic organizer that we did today, comparing and contrasting the butterfly and a ladybug. Click the picture to download the graphic organizer.
Tomorrow we are going to get pollen from flowers like a butterfly- I hope to have pictures to post. Hope everyone is having a great week.

Back From Vages Freebies To Come!
We are back from Las Vegas!! It was a wonderful and well needed trip. No I didn't come back a millionaire, but I did get to see some amazing sites, so I am not to bumbed.:)
My favorite site was the Grand Canyon, wow, wow, wow. It is even more beautiful in person. "Yes, I did it"-- thats what my t-shirt says. I walked the Skywalk!! That is an amazing task for someone who has a crazy fear of heights!! I held on so tight to my husbands hand, you would have thought that I was getting ready to plunge over the side. Here is a picture of Eagles Point- my favorite sight.
I am in the process of making a Earth Day unit. I am going to try to have it done by the weekend. Also, I will have a freebie posted real soon!!

Don't Take Life For Granted--Reprioritize
Sorry for the absence! Last week was just crazy, Mary was sick and things in my world were just plane hectic!! Then on Friday morning we get a call from our mom that our cousin had passed away. Steve had been fighting brain cancer for about 8 years. We new his time with us was getting short, the doctors told his wife and my aunt back in February that he had about 6 weeks. Even though you try to prepare yourself, and you know the time is coming, it doesn't make it easier on the family.
Last June we lost our father unexpectedly! One day we were celebrating my oldest nephews graduation with him and then the next morning we get the call that he had passed away in the night. Not sure which is worse the shock of the unexpected or knowing the time is coming and trying to prepare yourself. Luckily, we had spent a lot of time with my dad the week before his passing. We feel in our hearts that we had some true quality time with him!! In our minds our father was going to live forever! We took for granted that he would always be a phone call away or a few miles down the road. So making sure we saw or called him wasn't a priority- he as always going to be there.
With all that being said, the lose of our loved ones has made us reflect back and take a look on how we prioritize things. A spotless house, laundry always folded, a neatly landscaped yard, perfect lesson plans, centers that ALWAYS match the month. The list could just keep going on. It just doesn't seem to be that important anymore. We started to realize that spending time with our family and friends and creating those memories that our children will take with them as adults is much more important. To bad it has taken me (Barbara) 40 years to finally get it!!!
So as I write this I just ask that you stop and take a look at your priorities. What things do you take for granted? My daughter asked me the other evening to come outside and watch her practice riding her bike without training wheels. I was in the middle of lesson plans. Normally, I would have said "Let me finish these plans and I will come out when I am done." Not this time I immediately jumped up and got on my shoes. Plans can always wait!!
Remember those you love and take the time that is needed to nurture those relationships because in the end what more do you really have!!!!!
Because we appreciate each of you here is an Easter short vowel sort that I will be using as a review the first week in April. Click the image to go our TPT store to download.

Teachers Taking Care of Teachers
Everytime we turn on the news and learn about the updates about those who have been affected by this terrible tradegy it saddnes our hearts. It really hits home because this was what our weather reporters were predicting for our area. Somehow by the grace of God, it missed us!
What can we do to help? We will be dontating our items in our TPT store to those teachers in need.
Krystal at Kreative in Kinder is having is having a Link Up for teachers that want to help the teachers that lost everything from the tordadoes that hit thier area. Please link up to help those teachers.
Come back tomorrow for a Spring Freebie.

Hump Day Freebie!
Why do four day weeks seem longer than five day weeks? Kids did not come to school on Monday because it was a PLC day for teachers in the district. It never fails, the week seems to go by so much slower when the kids don't come everyday!! Here is a little something that Mary put together to help her students with prefixes. Hope some of you can use it!

Weather Unit On TPT
We finally posted our weather unit last night on TPT along with a word game for vowel digraphs (au, aw, ew, ui). I had put together a collage to advertise the weather unit- but can't seem to find where it saved on the computer. If you are interested and want to check it out there is a preview on TPT. I hope everyone had a great start to the week. No kids today, its a PLC (Professional Learning Club) day here in our district.

Prayers For The Storm Victims
Yesterday was a very stressful day and evening here in Central Kentucky! Fortunately our area was not hit. The storm went right above and below us, based on the weather patterns we were suppose to get hit pretty hard! Unfortunately, as I am sure you all know, several areas were hit very hard, even completely destroyed! Our hearts go out to those who were affected by this terrible sequence of tornado's. Prayers are being sent your way.
Here is a writing prompt that I am going to use with my kiddos during St. Patricks Day week. Click the picture to download.

PDF Issues So Here is a Feebie
To make a long story short, our trial version of Adobe Acrobat Pro X expired. Tried to buy it on line but was having a hard time getting a stub to download to show proof that we were teachers so we could get the discounted price. We went to Best Buy and bought it, came home and downloaded it, but still had to have proof if eligibility!! So we have to go to school to get a copy of our pay stub scan it etc.. So I can't upload our St. Patricks Day Unit or Weather unit until we can secure our documents. So sorry, as soon as we get our code for Adobe we will upload the activities.
I was over at 3am Teacher and she had some adorable Dr. Seuss clip art for free. I used the tree clip art and made a fact family activity for my math stations for next month. This is a consolation prize for not being able to get our unit up this weekend. Click the picture below.
Please keep checking back - as soon as we get our serial number we will secure our documents and upload the activities!

Are you ready for the weekend??
I am! You would think after a three day weekend last week and only a four day work week, we would not be so tired! NOT, actually four day weeks just drag on and on!! So Friday is looking pretty good right now. Our goal this weekend is to finish our St. Patrcks Day Unit and our Weather Unit. How do you guys do it? Between work, family, and house hold responsibilities, we can't seem to get anything done for this blog through the week. We would love to hear how you manage your time through the week and work on your blog.
Here is a little something for our followers. We have been working on self to text connections. This is in my reading center. My students really seem to enjoy finding something in a story that they can relate to.
Have a great weekend!

March Is Around the Corner and a Little Something Extra!!
How many of you were off today? I was and I had all intentions of working on school related resources, but I just couldn't get motivated. I just wanted to lay around in my PJ, watch t.v., and take long naps. So that is what I did and it was wonderful!!!! Mary, on the other hand, did not have the case of the "LAZYS" She has been working on a few resources that are going to go into our St. Patricks Day Units. There will be two of them, one geared for first grade and one geared for second grade. Our goal is to have these units ready for TPT next weekend. So to celebrate a wonderful day off, here is a March freebie that I am going to be using in my math stations next month. If you download it please let us know what you think.

It's only Tuesday? And a freebie
It's only Tuesday? Wow, seems like it should be a Thursday night! I am so ready for the weekend. We have Monday off for Presidents Day. I have started my Presidents Day Unit this week and plan on continuing next week with symbols. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera both Monday and today. Mary I am counting on you!! Because time has gotten away from Mary and myself we never got our Presidents Symbols Unit together. We wrote our own book but that's the extent of what we got done. So lucky you, you get it as a freebie. If you download it please leave us a comment and tell us what you think. It is also in our TPT store.

Random and Listening Center Freebie
Happy Wednesday!!! It has been a very long week, and its only half way through. I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend with my husband. We have decided to leave the kids with my mother-in-law and go away for the weekend and celebrate Valentines Day early. Don't get excited, it no where far-- just an hour away. We just thought it would be nice to just spend some time alone.
On another note, we have been studying characters and setting and being able to describe them in detail!!! Here is a listening center sheet that I have been using for the last couple of weeks. Maybe it will be useful for you. Enjoy the rest of your week.

I have been up since 2 A.M., It's been like this all weekend!! Though I am getting alot done, I feel like a new born that has my days and nights mixed up. Because I have been up all morning, I have finished and uploaded my Valentines Math Stations Mini unit. It consists of addition and subtraction, place value, time, and money, Here is a sneak peek: The first 2 people to comment on this post will get it for free.
Now for the freebie. As I was searching through my files, I found this. I never got the license to sell it so I have decide to give away. The activities in this little unit are things that my students are working on for enrichment or interventions. Have a great Sunday!!
